Meet Senator John Laird

John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County.

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

The California Legislature passed SB 1023 by Senator Laird, legislation to expand access to long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a highly effective medication used to prevent HIV infection. The bill now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom for consideration.
