Meet Senator John Laird

John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County.

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

Senator Laird Introduces Bill to Ensure Continued Funding for Communities Impacted by Diablo Canyon

March 26, 2026

When the state extended operations at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant through 2030, it did not extend the community funding established to offset local impacts. Senator Laird and principal coauthor Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) introduced legislation to address that funding gap and ensure continued support for local governments and schools in San Luis Obispo County.

Three years after a catastrophic levee breach along the Pajaro River forced thousands of residents to evacuate and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, Senator Laird has introduced SB 1055 to help accelerate critical flood protection projects along the river.
