Meet Senator John Laird

John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County.

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

SF Chronicle: Trump administration says California can’t ban disposable camping propane canisters

September 10, 2026

The Trump administration this week moved to block California’s plan to phase out sales of the single-use propane cylinders that campers use to fuel their camping stoves. A California law passed in 2024 would ban sales of disposable one-pound propane products — the handheld, forest-green canisters made by Coleman and Bernzomatic — beginning in 2028. Advocates say switching to reusable cylinders — which can be refilled at home or through a canister-exchange program — will save consumers money and cut down on hazardous waste.
