Meet Senator John Laird

John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County.

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

Senator Laird’s SB 575 to Restore California Sea Otter Voluntary Contribution Fund Heads to Governor’s Desk

August 11, 2026

SB 575, authored by Senator Laird, passed the California Legislature with bipartisan support and now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom for consideration. The measure restores the California Sea Otter Voluntary Contribution Fund, allowing taxpayers to once again support sea otter conservation and research through voluntary donations on their state income tax returns.

Senator Laird issued a statement following Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement that the state will not take action this year on extending Diablo Canyon beyond 2030.

Gov. Newsom won’t extend life of CA’s only nuclear power plant. What that means

August 10, 2026

The fate of Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant will remain in limbo for the rest of the year — after Gov. Gavin Newsom said he won’t act to extend its operating life during the final months of his term. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued PG&E an operating license for the plant that expires in 2044 for Unit 1 and 2045 for Unit 2, but the state has only approved operation of the plant’s twin reactors through 2029 and 2030.
