Meet Senator John Laird

         


John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County. 

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

Legislature Passes Laird Bill to Accelerate Pajaro River Flood Protection Projects

August 17, 2026

SB 1055 by Senator Laird, legislation to help accelerate critical flood protection projects along the Pajaro River by expanding the contracting tools available to the Pajaro Regional Flood Management Agency (PRFMA), passed the California Legislature with bipartisan support and now awaits action by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Senator Laird Secures Agreement with SLO County and PG&E to Support Community Funding

August 17, 2026

The agreement between PG&E and San Luis Obispo County is the first step to addressing the funding gap. The county will receive two annual payments of $8.3 million that will be redistributed to local agencies whose budgets have been impacted by the accelerated decrease in unitary tax funding from the power plant and the expiration of the community fund.
