Meet Senator John Laird

John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County.

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

Senator John Laird announced the introduction of Senate Joint Resolution 12, a bipartisan measure opposing the federal government’s proposed 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program and calling for California to be removed from the proposed plan, stronger environmental review and public engagement in the process.
