Senator Laird Announces Monica Martinez as 2026 LGBTQ Pride Month Honoree

SACRAMENTO – Senator John Laird today announced that Santa Cruz County Supervisor Monica Martinez has been selected as his 2026 Pride Month Honoree and recognized as part of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus’s annual Pride Month celebration.

Martinez was recognized during the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Pride Month Floor Ceremony at the State Capitol today as one of 15 distinguished Californians being honored for their contributions to the LGBTQ+ community and for serving as exemplary role models.

Martinez, who represents Santa Cruz County’s Fifth District and currently serves as chair of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, made history in 2024 as the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and the first woman elected to represent the Fifth District.

“Supervisor Martinez has dedicated her career to expanding opportunity, strengthening communities, and serving those most in need,” said Laird. “As the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, she has helped break barriers while remaining deeply committed to public service. I am proud to see her recognized for her leadership and the example she sets for future generations.”

A lifelong public servant, Martinez previously served for more than a decade as CEO of Encompass Community Services, where she led one of the region’s largest nonprofit organizations focused on behavioral health, housing, and family services. Throughout her career, she has worked to strengthen support systems for vulnerable populations and expand access to services that help individuals and families thrive.

As county supervisor, Martinez has prioritized access to healthcare and essential services, support for youth and families, disaster preparedness, and public safety. A parent of two school-aged children and former resource parent for children in the child welfare system, she has been a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ youth, inclusive healthcare, and policies that promote opportunity and belonging for all residents.

“Being selected as a Pride Honoree is deeply meaningful to me, both personally and professionally,” said Martinez. “Growing up in a conservative family in Bakersfield, I did not see many openly LGBTQ+ leaders in public life, and I understand how powerful representation can be, especially for young people who are still learning who they are and where they belong. As the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, I carry that responsibility with a great sense of pride and purpose. I hope my leadership helps demonstrate that LGBTQ+ people belong in every space where decisions are being made and that our voices and experiences strengthen our communities.”

The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, comprised of openly LGBTQ+ members of the California State Senate and Assembly, hosts the annual Pride Month Floor Ceremony to recognize Californians who have advanced representation, equality, and inclusion while serving as role models for LGBTQ+ communities throughout the state.
