State Senator John Laird joins Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission

SACRAMENTO – State Sen. John Laird has been appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom and Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC), recognizing his long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, coastal conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and leadership on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

“It is an honor to be appointed to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission and be able to continue my work on sustainable fisheries and Marine Protected Areas” said Senator Laird. “California’s fisheries continue to be critical to our nation’s economy and environment. I look forward to working with my fellow commissioners to advance and develop sustainable policies that protect these resources for future generations.” 

Senator Laird has been a vocal leader for environmental preservation throughout his career, including his tenure in the California State Assembly and as Secretary of the Natural Resources Agency. His leadership has been instrumental on water policy reforms, coastal restoration efforts, environmental protections, and the establishment of several successful MPAs on California’s coast.

Established in 1947 by consent of Congress, the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission PSMFC is an interstate compact agency that helps resource agencies and the fishing industry sustainably manage our valuable Pacific Ocean resources in a five-state region. Member states include, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. Each state is represented by three commissioners.
