State Senator John Laird has been appointed to the Legislative Advisory Committee within the California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) by Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire (D-North Coast) and the Senate Rules Committee.
With nearly five decades of public service, including roles as Mayor of Santa Cruz, Assemblymember, and as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency, Senator Laird brings relevant expertise in conservation, environmental preservation, and public lands management. His deep knowledge and leadership will play a pivotal role in ensuring strong legislative oversight as the WCB works to protect California’s wildlife and natural resources.
“I am honored to join the Legislative Advisory Committee at the Wildlife Conservation Board,” said Senator Laird. “California remains at the forefront of wildlife conservation, habitat restoration, and expanding public access to recreate both on land and in the sea. I look forward to working with the WCB to preserve and enhance the natural resources of the Central Coast and beyond.”
The California Wildlife Conservation Board was created by legislation in 1947 to administer a capital outlay program for wildlife conservation and related public recreation. The WCB’s main responsibilities are land acquisition, habitat restoration, and development of wildlife-oriented public access facilities. The Legislative Advisory Committee, made up of three members of the Senate and three members of the Assembly, provides crucial legislative oversight, ensuring that the WCB’s mission aligns with California’s conservation goals.
With this appointment, Senator Laird will work closely with the WCB to advance sustainable land management practices, support fire-protection programs, and strengthen California’s leadership in environmental stewardship and public lands management.
