Senator John Laird Appointed as Chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón announced that State Senator John Laird has been appointed to chair the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee for the remainder of the 2025–26 legislative session.

The Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee is responsible for shaping California’s annual state budget and overseeing fiscal policy that impacts communities statewide. As a member of the committee, Laird will help guide critical funding decisions affecting education, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental protection, and essential public services.

“I am honored to be appointed to Chair the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee,” said Laird. “Having previously chaired the Assembly Budget Committee, I understand the seriousness of this responsibility and know there will be difficult times ahead. I look forward to listening to the priorities of my colleagues to shape thoughtful decisions that balance fiscal responsibility with the real needs of Californians.”

Laird previously served as Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee from 2004 to 2008, where he oversaw the development of the state budget during a period of significant fiscal challenges and helped guide responsible investments in education, healthcare, and public services. He currently serves as Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education.

“Senator Laird brings deep experience, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility to the Budget Committee,” said Limón. “His previous service as Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, along with his long-standing focus on education, the environment, and working families, will be invaluable as we work to deliver a budget that reflects California’s values and meets the moment.”
