Marine Mammal Center opens new rescue hub in Castroville
The Marine Mammal Center has opened a new 4,000-square-foot rescue hub in Castroville, Monterey County, to improve rescue operations along the Monterey and Santa Cruz coast, where nearly half of the center's patients originate.
Cecily Majerus, CEO of the Marine Mammal Center, said, "So by having this facility, we are much closer to reach those animals so we can provide lifesaving care much quicker and have a greater impact than we've already had in this area. So we are really able to step up our game and our response by being here with this bigger facility."
State Senator John Laird attended the opening ceremony, highlighting the center's reputation.
"They are just known everywhere as a place you can go as a resource, as a scientific resource," he said. "It's not just at their rescue agency, it's that they tell us about the health of the marine environment by what they do."
