Senator Laird’s Statement in Support of SB 1098

I wholeheartedly support the recent legislative proposal championed by Sen. Catherine Blakespear (D — Encinitas) recognizing its critical importance in revitalizing the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) rail corridor. It is a vital transportation link for San Luis Obispo to Southern California.

SB 1098 is a proactive step towards addressing the pressing challenges of coastal resilience and service disruptions along a vital rail line used by Californians and tourists alike. Under this bill, the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) would create an action plan to empower and guide regional stakeholders to prioritize capital projects and implement measures to enhance the efficiency and reliability of rail services. As a result, this legislation not only promotes sustainable transportation solutions, but also contributes to the economic vitality and well-being of communities throughout the region. I look forward to working with Sen. Blakespear and my colleagues to assure the continued operations of the LOSSAN rail corridor remain a priority at both the state and local level.

Last year, I authored SB 272 to plan for the realities of sea level rise. Given the critical nature of this corridor, I do feel it is important to bypass that process, and ensure this traffic-alleviating project move ahead.
