Senator Laird Issues Statement on Attorney General Bonta’s Lawsuit Defending California’s Propane Cylinder Law
SACRAMENTO – Senator John Laird issued the following statement today in response to Attorney General Rob Bonta’s lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s attempt to block Senate Bill 1280, legislation authored by Laird in 2024 that prohibits the sale of certain single-use propane cylinders beginning January 1, 2028.
“I thank Attorney General Bonta for taking on the Trump Administration’s federal overreach. I authored SB 1280 to save taxpayers the cost of disposing of used propane canisters, and to protect workers and communities from the fire and explosion risks posed by propane cylinders thrown away in our parks and beaches.
Let’s be clear: this law doesn’t ban propane. It simply replaces dangerous single-use cylinders with refillable alternatives. Yet the Trump Administration would rather protect a company’s business model than the safety of California workers and taxpayers. Our responsibility is to protect Californians and our environment.”
