What is the Form 1099G?

The EDD issued a Form 1099G to people who received unemployment benefits in 2020. California unemployment compensation is exempt from state income tax, but federal law requires it be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The EDD regularly provides a Form 1099G to all individuals who received unemployment compensation in the prior year, including income from some types of State Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave benefits. The 2020 Form 1099G also reflects the $600 and $300 federal additional assistance payments, which are taxable.

What should I do if I received a Form 1099G from the EDD and I did not receive unemployment compensation?

Last year criminals filed claims for unemployment benefits using stolen identities at an unprecedented rate. Unsuspecting Californians may receive a Form 1099G from the EDD, indicating a claim was made in their name, address, or Social Security number.

The EDD offers online and telephone resources to help residents who believe they are victims of identity theft or have other questions about a Form 1099G. Claims that are confirmed as imposter fraud will be removed from the associated Social Security number, and an amended 1099G will be provided.
