“End of Life Option Act” Clears First Committee

March 25, 2015

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Legislation carried by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to expand end of life options available to Californians passed out of the Senate Health Committee on a 6 to 2 vote today.  Senate Bill (SB) 128, the End of Life Option Act, will allow a mentally competent, terminally ill adult in California in the final stages of life to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician.  SB 128 now heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

New Video Testimony from Brittany Maynard Released Supporting End of Life Option Legislation

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today the family of Brittany Maynard released new video testimony from Brittany in support of aid-in-dying legislation.  Ms. Maynard wrote the testimony and recorded the video for California Legislators before her death in November, 2014.

Senator Monning Introduces Commercial Driving Safety Bill

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) has introduced legislation to improve road safety by strengthening training requirements for commercial drivers.

“Commercial drivers who lack adequate training put everyone on the road at risk,” Senator Monning said. “Requiring more rigorous training for drivers of big rigs and other large commercial vehicles is a common sense safety measure.  This bill will help prevent accidents and…most importantly…save lives.”

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) announced that applications for the 2015-16 California Senate, Assembly, Executive and Judicial Fellowship programs are available.  

The programs provide college graduates an opportunity to become full-time staff members at the State Capitol in Sacramento for 10 - 11 months beginning in October 2015.  Fellowships are jointly operated by the three branches of state government and the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).

Legislation to Help Sea Otters Introduced

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), along with Assemblymembers Alejo and Stone, introduced Senate Bill (SB) 17, to extend the sunset date for the California Sea Otter Fund five years, until 2021. 
“Given that the sea otter population remains in trouble, it is important to extend the tax check-off option on the state income tax form in order for Californians to be able to voluntarily assist in helping to protect this keystone species,” said Senator Monning.
