Senator Monning Introduces Extraordinary Session Bill As Part of Anti-Tobacco Legislative Package

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) introduced Senate Bill (SB) 6 as part of the Second Extraordinary Session to address indoor workplace environments in California where people may be exposed to secondhand smoke.  The measure is part of a six bill package aimed at reducing tobacco use in the state.

Aid-in-Dying Legislation Removed from Assembly Health Committee Calendar

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, the End of Life Option Act, authored by Senators Monning (D-Carmel) and Wolk (D-Davis), was removed from the Assembly Health Committee calendar.  Senate Bill (SB) 128 would allow a mentally competent, terminally ill adult in the final stages of life to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician. 

Bill Extending Independent Review of Diablo Canyon Passes First Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Legislation authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) to extend the independent review on seismic studies and surveys of Diablo Canyon Power Plant passed out of the Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications on a 10 to 0 vote.

Senator Monning Names Patti’s Perfect Pantry as 2015 Small Business of the Year

Aid-in-Dying Legislation Passes Out of the Senate

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, the End of Life Option Act, authored by Senators Monning (D-Carmel) and Wolk (D-Davis), passed off the Senate Floor with a vote of 23-14.  Senate Bill (SB) 128 will allow a mentally competent adult in the final stages of life due to a terminal disease to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician. 

California Medical Association Officially Changes Position on Aid in Dying

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, the California Medical Association (CMA) announced it has become one of the first state medical associations in the nation to change organizational policy with regard to the issue of physician aid in dying.  The group’s longstanding position had been to oppose physician aid in dying and had been upheld several times since the policy was adopted in 1987.  By removing decades old organizational policy, CMA has also removed its opposition to Senate Bill (SB) 128 (Monning/Wolk), the End of Life Option Act.

Senator Monning Announces Local Grant Award

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) is pleased to announce that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) awarded a $2,996,768 grant to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.

Elkhorn Slough’s Blue Carbon project will increase regional carbon sequestration through salt marsh restoration.

Senator Monning Bill to Protect Foster Youth Passes First Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Senate Bill (SB) 253, legislation carried by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), to create a more rigorous process for prescribing psychotropic drugs to foster children, passed out of the Senate Human Services Committee on a 5 to 0 vote today.
 
“SB 253 will provide the courts with key factors to consider when making the potentially life-changing medical decision to prescribe a foster child psychotropic drugs,” Senator Monning said.  “Too often foster children are prescribed psychotropic drugs without the proper oversight.

Commercial Driving Safety Bill Passes First Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - Senate Bill (SB) 344, legislation carried by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) to improve road safety by strengthening training requirements for commercial drivers, passed the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on a unanimous vote today.

“End of Life Option Act” Passes out of Senate Judiciary Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Legislation carried by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to expand the end of life options available to Californians passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 5 to 2 vote today.  Senate Bill (SB) 128, the End of Life Option Act, will allow a mentally competent adult in the final stages of life due to a terminal illness to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician.  SB 128 now moves on to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
