Sugary Drink Warning Label Wins Legislative Victory

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Safety warning labels on sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in California came a step closer to reality today when the Senate Committee on Health approved Senate Bill (SB) 1000 on a 5-2 vote.  The first-in-nation legislation was introduced by State Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) to ensure that all Californians are aware of the link between sugary drink consumption and the exploding rates of diabetes and obesity.

Senator Monning to Hold a Hearing to Determine if California Businesses are Ready for a Major Earthquake

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), Chair of the Senate Committee on Insurance, announced that he will hold an informational hearing on Wednesday March 26, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 112 of the State Capitol to examine the impact a major earthquake would have on California’s businesses and its economy.  

“The recent earthquake in Los Angeles should serve as a reminder that we live in earthquake country and that the lives and property of millions of Californians are at risk,” stated Senator Monning.    

Senator Monning Authors Consumer Rights Legislation to Provide Control of Vehicle Data

 (SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) announced the introduction of consumer rights legislation that will provide vehicle owners control over the personal information generated by on-board computer technology systems found in connected cars.  The Consumer Car Information and Choice Act will require car buyers to be notified that their vehicle information is collected by automakers, and establish that consumers have the right to access this information and control with whom it is shared.

Senator Monning Authors Legislation Mandating School Truancy Reporting

Boating Education Legislation Introduced

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Senator Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) introduced Senate Bill (SB) 941, to require an individual to pass a boating education examination and obtain a vessel operator card from the Division of Boating and Waterways in order to operate a boat in California.

“This legislation is needed to enhance the public’s safety on our state’s waterways and minimize the loss of life, personal injury, and property damage,” stated Senator Monning.

Legislation To Benefit Monterey Peninsula Water Ratepayers Introduced

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), along with Senator Cannella and  Assemblymembers Alejo and Stone, introduced Senate Bill (SB) 936.  SB 936 authorizes the California Public Utilities Commission to allow the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District to issue water rate relief bonds to the public for the purpose of financing a portion of the California American Water Company (Cal-Am) Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF MATCHING FUNDS DONOR FOR THE VETERANS CEMETERY

 (SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) announced today that the Central Coast State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Ord is anticipating a $1 million matching grant to complement local and state fundraising efforts.

This donation toward the local community’s effort to raise funds for the non-reimbursed costs to build the cemetery will supplement the $1 million appropriation achieved when Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 232, authored by Senator Monning, last week.

GOVERNOR SIGNS LEGISLATION TO BENEFIT CENTRAL COAST VETERANS CEMETERY

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Governor Brown signed legislation today authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) that will appropriate $1 million toward the non-reimbursed costs to construct the Central Coast State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Ord.  The appropriation in Senate Bill (SB) 232 will supplement the funds already raised by the community and provide the financial assurance needed for the California Department of Veterans Affairs (Cal-Vet) to formally respond to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs’ (USDVA) grant offer announced earlier in October.
