We had the opportunity to spend a few minutes this week with Congressman Sam Farr and state Sen. Bill Monning at an open forum updating everyone on the status of the veterans cemetery on Fort Ord. It was a fairly well-attended event with parties from both sides of the issue.

 (SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, the Assembly Committee on Health failed to pass Senate Bill (SB) 1000, authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), which sought to place health warning labels on sugar-sweetened beverages akin to tobacco and alcohol.

A first-of-its-kind bill to warn consumers that soda and other sweetened beverages are dangerous survived a nail-biting vote in the state Legislature Thursday.

With the tone of a prosecutor and the fervor of a public health nurse, Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, made the case to fellow senators that sugary drinks were a pernicious threat to the public health, pointing to numerous studies blaming them for a variety of ailments, including childhood diabetes.

Sen. Bill Monning's efforts to slap a warning label on soft drinks and other sugary beverages cleared its first legislative test Wednesday.

Borrowing a tactic used on alcohol and cigarettes, the Carmel Democrat wants Californians to see a safety warning when they pick up a soda pop telling them sweetened beverages can lead to a variety of diseases.

"The status quo is unacceptable," Monning said. "There is a public health epidemic in this state."
