California 'right-to-die' bill proposed

Inspired by a Bay Area woman's highly publicized quest to end her grueling battle with cancer, lawmakers are renewing efforts to allow California's terminally ill greater choice over how and when they die.

On Wednesday, two Democratic state senators and the family of the late Brittany Maynard will unveil the End of Life Option Act, which allows doctors in California to prescribe a lethal dose of medications to terminally ill patients.

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) announced that applications for the 2015-16 California Senate, Assembly, Executive and Judicial Fellowship programs are available.  

The programs provide college graduates an opportunity to become full-time staff members at the State Capitol in Sacramento for 10 - 11 months beginning in October 2015.  Fellowships are jointly operated by the three branches of state government and the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).

Earlier this month, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon announced that he had appointed Sen. Bill Monning (D – Carmel) to serve as Majority Leader.

The Majority Leader serves as the main Floor manager for the President pro Tempore and the Majority Party, and serves as the chief assistant to the President pro Tempore in political matters and strategy.

Sexual Harassment Training Required For Farm Employees

December 29, 2014

California’s farm fields can be threatening places for agriculture workers. But a new law going into effect next year is designed to make those fields a bit safer. As part of our annual new law series, Katie Orr reports from Sacramento.

The law will require farm labor contractors to provide all supervisors, foremen and employees with sexual harassment training. Democratic Senator Bill Monning authored the bill.

Stone, Monning call for end to drift gill nets

December 22, 2014

A controversial way of catching swordfish that often snags other marine life needs to end, said five politicians in a letter sent Monday to federal fishery managers.

State Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, and Assemblyman Mark Stone, D-Scotts Valley, signed the letter that called for an end to drift gill nets, known for snagging everything from dolphins to sea otters.

“While progress has been made, the amount of bycatch caught in drift gill nets used to capture swordfish remains unacceptable,” the letter read.
