Meet Senator John Laird

         


John Laird was re-elected to the State Senate on November 5, 2024, carrying all four counties in the district which encompass Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey Counties, as well as the majority of San Luis Obispo County. 

Prior to his Senate service, Laird served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency under Governor Jerry Brown from January 5, 2011, until January 7, 2019.

Senator Laird’s SB 575 to Restore California Sea Otter Voluntary Contribution Fund Passes the Senate

January 26, 2026

Senate Bill 575, authored by Senator John Laird, was approved by members of the State Senate with bipartisan and unanimous support. SB 575 re-establishes the California Sea Otter Voluntary Contribution Fund, allowing taxpayers to once again support sea otter conservation and near-shore ecosystem protection through voluntary donations on their state tax returns.

The rule of law is meaningless if federal agents are empowered and even encouraged to operate with impunity in American cities with no oversight from their handlers in Washington.
