Editorial, Sept. 13, 2015: It’s time for end-of-life option

September 13, 2015

The time to adopt carefully drafted end-of-life legislation has come.

The considerations surrounding proposed state legislation to allow certain terminally ill patients to request aid in dying are complex and emotional and require the most thoughtful and careful analysis and debate.

We feel the requirements have been met, and we endorse the bill’s signing by the governor.

State Senator Bill Monning, D-Carmel, has been a leader in addressing this critical issue. Monning has meticulously examined the entire issue and consulted with both supporters and opponents of the concept. He recognized that only a truly comprehensive examination of the issues could lead to a well-drafted bill that would have broad enough support to pass.

Monning and Senate colleague Lois Wolk, D-Davis, introduced End-of-Life Options Act in the regular legislative session. The bill allows California physicians to prescribe life-ending drugs to terminally ill patients who meet a carefully crafted set of criteria. However, the bill got held up in an Assembly Committee and did not get through the Legislature.
