Senator Monning’s Statement on PUC’s Decision

January 11, 2018

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) issued the following statement regarding the California Public Utilities Commission’s decision on the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant Agreement that was issued earlier today:

“I am deeply disappointed that the California Public Utilities Commission decided to adopt the Administrative Law Judge’s decision that denied $85 million to the Community Impacts Mitigation Program.  San Luis Obispo County agreed to house the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, which provides power to more than 3 million people and benefits Californians despite the negative repercussions.  The County and its residents deserve to be compensated for the impacts they will incur when the plant shuts down.  With this in mind, I will be looking into legislative options to assist the San Luis Obispo community.”

Pacific Gas and Electric Company will retire the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in 2024 and 2025, when its federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission operating licenses expire.
