Senator Monning's Statement on Enactment of Farm Worker Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Bill

October 03, 2017

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) issued the following statement on Senate Bill (SB) 295, regarding farm worker sexual harassment prevention training, which was signed by Governor Brown:

“I am pleased that Governor Brown signed Senate Bill (SB) 295 to require stronger enforcement of sexual harassment prevention training requirements for farmworkers.  As of January 2018, the California State Labor Commissioner will be able to ensure that violations identified in inspections and investigations of farm labor contractors are pursed vigorously.

The implementation of SB 295 will result in safer work places for all farmworkers and eliminate not only harassment, but also the many reported cases of sexual assault and violence against women."

SB 295 authorizes the state Labor Commissioner to cite Farm Labor Contractors (FLCs) when there is a finding that no or inadequate sexual harassment prevention training has occurred; when no records of training have been provided; when falsified training records are given to farm workers; and/or when there is failure to train workers in a language they understand.
