State Budget Signed By the Governor Includes $1.5 Million for California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery

June 27, 2017
(SACRAMENTO, CA)  - The state budget signed today by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. included $1.5 million for the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery (CCCVC).  This funding is necessary for Phase II development and expansion of the Cemetery and was secured by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Assemblymember Mark Stone (D-Monterey Bay).

“The funding secured in the state budget represents a major step toward expanding the Veterans Cemetery and increasing access to our local veterans,” Senator Monning said.  “Not only is this veterans cemetery a source of great pride and reflects a strong, successful coordinated effort by veterans and the local community, it also provides a distinguished final resting place for the brave men and women who selflessly served our nation.  The funds allocated will help ensure that the cemetery retains its priority standing to receive grant money from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and will allow any veteran to be laid to rest at the veterans cemetery at the former Fort Ord.”

The CCCVC opened in October 2016 after the first phase of construction was completed, which included the main entrance, roads, an assembly area, a committal shelter, landscaping, a memorial walkway, and columbarium niches.  However, because many veterans and their family members choose not to be cremated for personal, cultural, or religious reasons, they cannot currently utilize the cemetery.  Phase II construction will include approximately 2,000 in-ground crypts (burial sites) and approximately 1,700 in-ground burial plots, making the cemetery accessible to all of those who served.

“These funds ensure that we can honor our Central Coast veterans and their families locally,” said Assemblymember Mark Stone (D-Monterey Bay). “I’m proud to have joined Senator Monning to advocate for this much-needed additional $1.5 million in state funding to help complete the cemetery.”
